Best Apps For Blind Or Low Vision Android Users – 2019 Edition

Getting a new phone for Xmas is always a great time to reflect on what apps you truly use or need and what apps you can do away with.  So as part of the cleaning of my phone I compiled this list of aps I commonly use or need.  First will be the top 10 list and 2nd will be the full list of things on my phone:

Often I get asked what apps I use or which ones I would recommend. After just switching from my  Samsung Galaxy to the  Blackberry Key2 Android dual sim Phone, I was forced to ask myself what apps do I want to install on the new phone and  which ones I could do without.

I used a great application called  App List Backup via Email. This app allows you to create a list of apps to install on a device. You can select some or all  apps and you can send it as either a clickable list with links or as a data file that the program  itself will read and use to simplify the process. The advantage of using this app is that It has  made it rather easy for me to share with you the apps that I chose.

As a partially sighted mostly blind person who uses mainly Talkback and high contrast or an inverted screen configuration. . The below apps should also be mostly or fully usable by any sighted or partially sighted android  user. Hopefully you find this list interesting and find a few useful apps to add to your devices.

Also, if you are looking for more great apps, don’t forget to check out the directory of apps at  the  Inclusive Android Site  and feel free to post lists of your own app recommendations or links to lists of your favourite  apps below.

Top 10 Apps

  1. @Voice Aloud Reader: A great document reader that can read aloud the contents of a lot of different file formats including docx, rtf, txt, pdf, pptx and many more.
  2. Amazing MP3 Recorder: A powerful and reliable  audio recording app
  3. Audex: A very cool app that allows you to change the sound scheme for actions and activities on the phone including screen reader notices.  It also allows you to get extra label information and label controls that aren’t accessible or labelled.  My daughter uses this feature to be able to use an app called what pad that has no labels but Audex provides sufficient info to figure out what each button does.
  4. Be My Eyes: A free app to call for video assistance.  A team of volunteers is available for general inquiries.  Also, companies can be reached for product specific service (e.g. Microsoft’s Disability and Accessibility Answer Desk)
  5. Nearby Explorer: GPS outdoor and Bluetooth beacon Indoor navigation system for blind travellers.  Best in class for online and offline travel.  Has downloadable maps for offline use.  Allows everything from street and location browsing to identifying the direction and information about points of interest around you.  Also integrates bus stops and timetables for supported cities.
  6. NFC Tools PRO: This app has a variety of tools for working with and writing to NFC Tags.  NFC Tags come in all kinds of forms including stickers.  You can use this app to write a variety of information on to a tag.  I’ve used NFC tag stickers for common labelling tasks like labelling packaging or documents and also for labelling card games. Because the tags can contain a lot of information they are ideal as a print alternative.
  7. AquaMail: The best and most usable email app for android.  Supports Tons of customisation. Allows you to connect all kinds of email services in 1 app.  Change the look, feel and behavior of the app.  Make sure you turn off the new “rich text editor” in the settings as it isn’t usable but also isn’t needed.
  8. Shouter Pro- The Announcer: A highly customisable tool to have your phone read certain messages or, information or notifications  using a Text To Speech Engine.  This is highly useful for having certain apps speak important messages without unlocking or loading the app.   You can also have the app talk only through the headset.  There is also a free version of shouter called Notification Reader: Shouter.
  9. File Commander: One of the best file management apps.  Supports a number of advanced features such as media conversion and cloud storage access
  10. Listen Audiobook Player: An audiobook player that supports many different file formats and is very configurable.  I especially like the fact that you can set a sleep timer that once it goes off, you can extend by simply shaking your phone.  If the sleep timer wasn’t shaked, you can set the app to rewind a certain amount of the audio so you never lose your place when reading books in bed.

I also considered adding the Blackberry Hub app to my top 10 apps because of how much it has helped me streamline all communication types on a device.  So it gets an honorable mention:

  • Blackberry Hub: The Blackberry Hub – a unified messaging and communication app that centralises all messages and allows you to filter the view from all kinds of services like hangout, facebook messenger, whatsapp, gmail, sms, etc.  I agree completely with the blurb from the ap description “This unified inbox is an irreplaceable tool for consolidating all of your messages in one place –  whether it’s email, calendar, social or phone calls. Once you experience BlackBerry Hub, you’ll  wonder how you ever lived without it. The Hub seamlessly integrates notifications from apps like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp,  Instagram and many others to allow you to manage important notifications and view your  communication history.”.  If you don’t have a BlackBerry device: You can use this app on your Android device absolutely free for 30 days. After that, you can  continue using the app for free, with some ads. To remove ads and unlock access to more apps,  subscribe to BlackBerry Hub+ Services.

  1. As a returning android user to the pixel XL three, I really appreciate this comprehensive list of applications to explore.

Give me a great place to get started with looking into apps I should install on this awesome device.

One question for you, do you still use nova launcher as your primary lawn trip? I’ve heard that it’s not as intuitive as it was in the past maybe?

Would love to get your feedback on that.
